Does it Make a Sound

by David Allyon
This is a minimalist poster design which caught my eye. Using negative space images to create the scene of a white tree stump in the foreground. A beige ground and a blue-green forest. The title of the event is lined up to imitate a tree trunk. the leading is skewed diagonal. It is a shaky serif font but it helps convey the idea of bark.

Nowhere Man

This is a poster design featuring the lyrics of one of my favorite Beatles songs, "Nowhere." It uses the elipses font with 1966  in black and the lyrics in blue .  On the right side a sphere with a man standing on the south pole disappearing as a paint stroke or smoke.  the background color is tan.  I could not find the artist name.

Star Wars retro-posters

  • - Star Wars Posters - Patrick Concepion - San Jose, California

A series of three 12" x 18" art prints. This was printed on thick uncoated French Paper Company Construction Whitewash 100 lb cover stock.

The original Star Wars episodes - A New Hope. Features orange and yellow circles to create the Dune Sea of Tattooine and black silhouettes of Artoo Detoo and See-Threepio. The titles are in very simple non caps . the colors are faded which gives them a faded feel.

The Empire Strikes Back, had a light blue "sky" in the header and white background represents the snow of Hoth and a silhouette of the Imperial Probe droid.

Return Of The Jedi. Green triangles represent the Endor forest and the deaths star is in the sky.

I so want these. I'd also like to create my own version of these.

flyer designs

Flyer design on Etsy

Various flyer designs found on Etsy.com by Sarah and Seven Carter of Newark, DE.

1. A basic logo with brand colors a pastel green and a grayish gradient.  Logo placement is dead and high up which is not very exciting and doesn't stand out

2. Lavender or mauve background color. The type for "salem village" is rotated vertically which plays off the yellowish bars which draw the eye to the photo.

3. A Realty company ad which contains a lot of information ad photos in a limited space. Negative space earth logo is hard to make out. The colors are kind of dark and drab.

4. This is a flyer for Sephora cosmetic store. They target audience is females with lots of pink and black. A photo of lipstick in a circle. A very handwritten looking font which is common for this type of ad.

5, Pool Party. Cool blue for the background btright pink and yellow text in a goofy fonts which might be comic sans or something crappy like that and a filmstrip with photos.

6. Rockwood Apartments - realty flyer - effective use of ovals and circles more.

7 and 8. aren't very interesting

Swayspace Folder

http://www.underconsideration.com/fpo/archives/2012/07/swayspace-letterpress-kit.

Kelly Cree - Swayspace folder design
In researching for the folder package thing I found this which is very sylish and very pop-art-....y.
It wouldn't work for the Osaka business thing but I like the logo and the colors are really nice and it looks very profesional.

The Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo logo - Carrie Madigan - New York, NY

This logo design caught my eye. The colors are earth tones which goes with the feel of animals and wildlife- or animals bred in captivity. The negative space in the giraffes' legs creates the skyline of New York.  It is a fun desugn that conveys the fun and excitement of going to the zoo.

Think With Your Heart (OR Face-palm through your skull)

Someone on my Facebook posted this. I nearly face-palmed so hard I it almost stopped my heart.  But then I started thinking with my brain- the organ in my body that actually does any thinking and started analyzing this design. The typography is bold and boring- looks like whoever designed this did not think at all. And if he or she did so with their heart it doesn't seem to work much better.  The designer was trying so hard to be clever but the concept is so dumb.  Looks like they just grabbed some random anatomy illustration of a head and shoulders- if you're going to convey someone thinking at least show them being thoughtful. The model in this drawing looks asleep or dead since it's probably a cadaver. The heart looks like a real heart with viens and arteries. The metaphorical heart that they are talking about is really the emotional 'try-toi-do the right thing kind of idea. Like every fantasy hero has to look inot his heart for the answer or the courage to slay the dragon or rescue the princess.

If I were designing this I would emphasize the emotional aspect instead of mismatched science because if you are going to mix bad science with stupid new agey heart chakra woowoo you're going to have a bad time.

Finding

Finding London by Aldo Pulella - Johannesburg, South Africa

Creative Visual Merchandising

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Creation-Visual-Merchandising-2013-Branding/7144219

This is a great example of brand identity.  Creation Visual Merchandising brand was created by Cindy Forster of Sydney Austratlia. The logo is simple but effective which a black background and white letters. The font is very stylisze with varying line weight which catches the eye and almost makes a visual optical illusion. The letters almost form a corkscrew.

Below is an assortment of designs which incorporate the brand logo, including letterhead, envelope, notebook. CD, and various stationary items. The use of the logo for the envelope is very neat.

Here the logo is used for a business card which carries the simple but striking logo and provides necessary contact information.

Eyedentity - 6

EYEDENTITY Photography Exhibition - BRAND LOGO - by Bob Sparks, London, UK
http://www.behance.net/gallery/Eyedentity-Brand/6773163

The above is a logo designed by Bob Sparks. It is a Logo for a photograpbhy exhibition. The design is striking as the graphic part of the logo is a diamond shape that conjures up the familiarity of a baseball diamond but uses style and line art to create a frame which relates to the theme of photgraphy. The logo is also a visual play on word eye-dentity in the cenrter. The designer created several variations of the design which is mostly in black and white or gray scale. The original version shows the eye as one would normally expect. And the revised version with the iris of the eye represented as a camera iris and lense for the pupil.

The text part of the logo is kind of a puzzle- with the visual _eye and -dentitiy in a simple sans serif font. The thin weight of the letters adds to the visual by suggesting eye lashes. The font makes the text hard to see from far away but close up it works.

Negative Space - post 5

Grenoble logo by Fabian Laborie - Montreal, Quebec, Canada

While researching logo designs for business cards and envelopes I came upon this design for Grenoble. It relates to the Osaka Tourism brand because it is representing a European city from the Middle Ages. The logo consists of a lion eating a snake in the foreground and a shield in the background. When combined the lion is created using negative space. It is a very fantastical image which says something about the folklore of the city and conveys that it is a medieval city.

logo and text design for Grenoble

The colors are two shades of blue with white as negative space. It changes the feel of the logo depending on which bits are blue or white.  the type is a very clean sans serif font that is inviting and simple.

The designer is Fabien Laborie of Quebec, Canada

Brand Identity - Blog Post 3

Brand Identity is the essence of what your company stands for in the marketplace and with employees as well. - Cono Fusco. LogoMojo.com

Types of Logos - Blog Post 2

There are several types of logos.

Abstract
The most common type of logo. Usually a shape or a image that may or may not be a recognizable object but does not directly represent the company or product. A few examples of this are the Nike Swoosh or the Pepsi globe.
A simple yet elegant curve that suggests wind or speed or even a shoe. I think of Hermes the Messenger god from Greek Mythology withe the winged sandals. Nike doesn't sell wind or speed but the swoosh suggests that with the product you will be really good at sports or like to spend a lot on brand name clothing.

Representational
Not widely used by big corporations but common for more local businesses like plumbers or construction. One of the most famous examples is the Burger King logo which is shaped like a burger.

Sports teams use a lot of representational logos. St. Louis Cardinals use a cardinal, the Tigers use a tigers, the rams a ram, the Eagles an eagle.

Font
Sports teams also used font based logos. The New York Giants as well as the New York Yankees use the stylistic NY which has become a symbol not just for the baseball team but for New York or New Yorkers themselves.

Iconic/symbolic

Iconic or symbolic logos are often an image that like the abstract doesn't necessarily represent the product but symbolizes how people think of the product, brand, or company.

The apple logo that we are familiar with is an example of iconic/symbolic. When you see it you think "apple".  Apple sells computers not apples but it also symbolizes the gift of knowledge.

Logotype/Symbolic

Logotype or Word mark uses typography to create a logo. This common for television shows and movies. These are crucial to the entertainment industry because they tell you what kind of show your are watching, the tone, and what it is about. Comedies or cartoons like Seinfeld, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy or The Simpsons use a lot of bubbly or colorful titles or play with font size to convey the goofy or comical nature of the show while dramas or sci-fi will use blocky or more stylized letters that suggest blood or magic or something.

Combination Marks

Combinations are exactly that.  A combination of both abstract and font. Or the iconic logo and the typographical logo. Nike logo can often inclue the Swoosh and the word Nike.
Combination Marks are common in Television Stations like NBC, CBS or ABC

and Motion Picture companies like Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Universal.

In our logo/letterhead project a combination is ideal because you can represent the brand with a recognizable graphic logo and
also with an equally recognizable font based logo.

Why are logos important? Blog Post 1

Why are logos important?

This is a question that I asked myself today as I was driving toward my Typography class or Graphic Design.
What's today? Thurday. Typography. Doesn't really matter. I was asking myself "Self?" What. Why are logos important? Why do they even matter. And why do I have write a stupid blog about it(actually I will probably end up having a lot of fun with this).  I am going to attempt to answer these questions. The first answer I had was "I don't know". Which is an honest answer I think. But as one of my mentors once said, "If you don't know, find out for yourself."

So I went onto the internet and found a website called logomojo.com. It can be found here: http://www.logomojo.com/ looking for some samples of logos to blog about or to inspire me to create even awesomer ideas for current or upcoming CGR projects. There is also an Meet the Design Team section which is very helpful in finding out what type of people become graphic design majors and various backgrounds.

After looking through some of the designs for logos and letter heads, I found a list of blogs from designers that work for logomojo.com
http://www.logomojo.com/design-process/the-logo-design-process

I found a list of what they called "The World's Best Logos". Which includes
links to blogs about why they are effective and good examples of why logos are important. Cono Fusco, a member of the LogoMojo design team writes, "A business logo design represents a symbol of identity, a means by which customers can instantly recognize your product or service. A logo design is moe memorable than their verbal counterparts."

Logos are important for bringing people in and creating trust in the product. The Golden Arches of MacDonalds tells customers that they can find the great tasting(or obesity inducting) foods they grew up with(or threw up after a night of drinking- perhaps). The iconic logo also helped create an international chain of restaurants for world travelers who find themselves in France or Japan or somewhere and find a little piece of home in a strange place.

That's all I have to say about that.

A Long Time Ago - Blog Post 4

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

As far back as I can remember there is one logo that has been a constant in my life. The Star Wars movie logo. It has appeared in a variety of various variations. I think my favorite is the one above with the black background and yellow outline letters that have that unique curvature and extended bits for the "S"es and "R". Fans of all ages recognize the Star Wars logo that begins every Episode with the first blaring note of the Main Title music by John Williams. It starts large and in your face and recedes as if beckoning "come with me" into this strange galaxy of adventure, excitement, and other things that Jedi are not supposed to crave.
